Of all the functions that mass finishing compounds carry out, cleaning is the most important. To effectively deburr, burnish or improve the surface, the part must be clean. Roto-Finish offers many excellent cleaning compounds. A cleaning compound is usually selected based upon quantity and type of soils to be removed and the type of part to be processed. New cleaners are developed to remove specific soils or to be used with specific parts or media. Some times, feed and roll of the mass is an issue so new compounds are developed to enhance these properties. Foam is also a very common issue - most of the time the complete dislike of foam. It is important to note that too much foam is messy, but foam is an essential part of mass finishing and some times necessary to carry out the desired cleaning process. The most popular alkaline cleaning compounds are:

L-391 is an alkaline cleaning compound that can be used with all metals except zinc. Its operating pH is 9.9. L391 has moderate foam level, good inhibition, and will not glaze media. It can be run with steel media but will run dark.
L-618 is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner that cleans a wide variety of soils. Its operating pH is 12.1. L618 has a tendency to glaze media. It is a moderately to high foaming compound and has good hard water stability. It is very effective on animal fats and vegetable oils.
L-638 is a liquid concentrate designed for use with ferrous metals in deburring applications. It has the ability to prevent rusting of parts during and after process and to leave parts and media clean.
L-824 is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner that will attack a wide variety of oils including chlorinated paraffins. Its operating PH is 10.1. L824 is a high foaming compound. It offers little corrosion protection.
L-824N was developed to add extra inhibiting properties to L824. L824N contains nitrites and special handling precautions must be used with handling and using this compound. It must be kept away from secondary amines. Secondary amines are sometimes found in animal fats and water-soluble inhibitors and cutting oils.
L-824C/L-824CS Formulations based on concentrated versions of L824 with different caustic builders. These two compounds are the best cleaners for chlorinated oils and paraffins. Either can be used with steel media but both will run dark. L824CS offers better corrosion protection than L824C.
L-824Z/L-824ZLF is a 2‑1 dilution of L‑824CS (1 part L824CS plus 2 parts water equals three parts L824Z). It is built with the same caustic constituents. L‑824 utilizes different builders.
L-824ZLF is a low foaming version of L824Z.
L-888 is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner that will attack a wide variety of oils (similar to L824). L888 offers better corrosion protection that L824.
Rtcycle6C is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner designed to be used in conjunction with Rtcycle3. It was designed to clean the media and lining and be completely compatible with Rtcycle3. Rtcycle6C can also be used as a process compound at 1‑3 ounces per gallon of water. It can also be used as a spray wash compound at 1‑5%. Rtcycle6C offers excellent cleaning and very good corrosion protection. It can be used with plastic, ceramic or steel media and offers very good feed and roll with steel media. Its operating pH is 9.8.
XL-1240C is a heavy duty alkaline cleaner built like L824CS but utilizing different caustic materials. XL1240C offers fair to good corrosion protection.
XL-1242 is a solvent based aqueous cleaner designed to emulsify heavy grease deposits. It is effective as a presoak to loosen heavy deposits. Its operating pH is 10. XL1242 offers moderate corrosion protection.
XL-1249 is a solvent based aqueous cleaner designed to emulsify heavy grease deposits. It is designed to be more mild than XL‑1242. Its operating pH is 8.5-9.0. XL1249 offers moderate corrosion protection.
XL-1281 Developed as a mixture of L618 and XL1240C. Some metals end up with a better color using L618 while others end up with a better color using X1240C. XL1281 was developed to find a happy medium between the two caustic systems and has been quite successful.
XL-1291 Excellent alkaline cleaning compound used with ceramic media on all metals. It was developed to remove tenacious oils and stubborn die lubes from parts. XL1291 efficiently removes silicon-based residue as well as oil- or water-based residues. It leaves the part ready for plating, painting or other processes. XL1291 is an extremely versatile compound and can be used as a vibratory compound or as a spray wash compound. The only negative aspect of XL‑1291 is that it has to be placarded as a flammable liquid. Because of its versatility, there have been many different versions of XL1291 developed.
XL-1291AX is a non-flammable version of XL1291 but still gives cleaning results comparable to XL1291.
XL-1291AXLF/XL-1291LF are low foaming versions of XL1291AX and XL1291.
XL-1294 Developed as a liquid version of 117C. It is a very low foaming compound and as such can be used in a spray wash system or in a power wash system. It was developed to split most oils but not emulsify them. As a result, the parts become clean, but oils separate out and can be skimmed from the spray wash system or a coalescing agent can be added to remove the oil.
XL-1295 was developed based on a mixture of L824C and XL1291. It was developed to add lube-cleaning capability on top of L824C’s oil cleaning capability. It contains no extra inhibiting so it must be followed by a post inhibit treatment.
XL-1315 Alkaline Cleaner designed to be used with spray wash machines to remove hard water deposits. It can be added directly to spray wash solution or used with water as a cabinet rinse.
XL-1320 Heavy duty Alkaline Cleaner designed to be used with ceramic, plastic or porcelain media on all parts. It offers medium foaming qualities. XL1320 contains no phenolic products. It offers good rust protection.
XL-1321 Mild Alkaline Cleaner designed to be run with ceramic, plastic, or porcelain media on all metals especially non ferrous. It was designed to be a lost cost replacement for RTC210. It offers medium foaming qualities.
XL-1326 Alkaline Cleaner designed for use with ceramic, plastic, or porcelain media on all metals. XL-1326 offers good cleaning with a mild pH buffering system and low BOD for the waste stream.
