Most alkaline burnishing compounds are designed with heavy chelating agents to improve the surface of the part as well as provide a nice deep shine. Chelating agents chemically react with metals to form water-soluble complex molecules. Unlike acid burnishing compounds that are usually run in steel media, alkaline burnishing compounds can be run with ceramic or plastic media. This can cut media costs. Also, ceramic media can be used for a deburring or descaling process, so an alkaline burnishing compound can be used in the same media as previous process(es). The most common alkaline burnishing compounds are: L-980 is the most popular, versatile alkaline burnishing compound. It is an excellent burnishing compound that offers excellent inhibition as well. L-980 can be used with plastic or ceramic media on all metals. Most new alkaline burnishing compounds were developed based upon L-980 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1277 was based upon L-980 with added burnishing capabilities but not as good inhibiting properties. It is used in the same way as L-980 (1 oz per gallon with ceramic media). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1277X was designed like XL-1277 but buffered to a higher pH and contains materials to help keep lines clear and free of buildup. It also contains biocide to control bacterial growth. XL-1277X is an alkaline burnishing compound normally used with hard ceramic or porcelain media on all metals especially non-ferrous metals. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1283 was designed as a very viscous L-980. It was developed to be used with ceramic media on all metals. XL-1283 was designed to be used as a single-dose additive (similar to paste) with additional doses periodically. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1285 was developed based upon L-980 with added inhibition qualities. It is to be used like L-980 as a burnisher and a post inhibit dip. It was designed to leave less of a film on the parts when used as a dip. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1305 is a redesigned, lower-cost version of L-980. It is an alkaline burnishing compound to be used with plastic or ceramic media. XL-1305 is used like L-980 (on all metals with excellent burnish and inhibition). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1305X is a low-cost version of XL-1305. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1305XA is based on XL-1305X but with added alcohol to help cleaning. It still has the burnishing capabilities as XL-1305X and used similarly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1322 Alkaline Burnisher designed to be used with ceramic, plastic, or porcelain media on all metals. XL-1322 is designed like L-980 with added cleaning capability. It offers medium to high foaming qualities. It offers good rust protection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1324 Alkaline Burnisher designed to be used with ceramic, plastic, or porcelain media on all metals. It offers medium to high foaming qualities. It offers very good rust protection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1324X is a low-cost version of XL-1324. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1325 Alkaline Burnisher designed to be used with ceramic, plastic, or porcelain media on all metals. XL-1325 also offers extra cleaning/stripping capabilities. It was designed similarly to XL-1291AX with extra burnishing properties. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1341 is an alkaline burnishing compound that was designed specifically to be used with steel media on aluminum parts. XL-1341 will keep steel media bright while most alkaline compounds run steel media dark. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1341LF is a low foam version of XL-1341. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1342 was designed based on L-980 with increased burnishing capabilities. It has a very high foam level. XL-1342 should be used like L-980: with hard ceramic or porcelain media on all metals especially non-ferrous. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1342LF2 is a low foam version of XL-1342. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XL-1363 is an excellent general-purpose alkaline burnishing compound for all metals except zinc. It imparts very light, bright colors to aluminum, brass, copper, & steel and can be used on all media, including steel media. XL-1363 is particularly good for aluminum, aluminum castings or extrusions. |
