A part may have been heated and developed a tough oxide film or an even tougher carbonized oxide film. In either case the compound used is: either very acidic (pH below 4.5), very alkaline (pH above 10), or very heavily chelated. It is very common to have strong chelating molecules in acid or alkaline solutions. This prolongs the activity of the solution and improves the effectiveness of the descaling operations.
Metal Finishing Products offers many acid descaling compounds as well as pre-dip compounds. These compounds cannot be used with carbon steel media but can be used with ceramic, plastic, or stainless steel media.

XL-414 is the most versatile and popular acid descaling compound. It can be used with ceramic, plastic, or stainless steel media as a process compound (1‑4 oz. per gal.) or as a pre-dip solution at 10‑100%. It can be used with all metals.
XL-414ND is built similarly to XL‑414 but with no dye and lower foam. XL‑414ND is also buffered to a lower pH to give copper and brass a brilliant shine.
XL-1081 is a non chelating acid descaler. It can be used as a process compound with ceramic, plastic, or stainless media (1‑4 oz. per gallon) or as a pre dip at 5‑100%. It can be used on all metals. XL‑1081 is especially effective as a dip removing light oxides from non-ferrous metals such as zinc or aluminum.
XL-1234 was developed similarly to XL‑414 with added descaling properties. It can be used as a pre-dip solution.
XL-1236 was designed specifically as a copper and brass pre-dip solution normally followed by a burnish application using L‑543 or other burnishing compound.
XL-1262I is an acid descaling compound with added cleaning capabilities. It can be used with carbon steel media and offers good burnishing capabilities. XL‑1262I was designed based upon XL‑414 with added oil cleaning capabilities. It is a high-foaming compound. A low-foaming version, XL‑1262ILF is available.
XL-1262ALF is built with the cleaning capabilities of XL‑1262I but buffered to a much lower pH for powerful descaling. XL‑1262ALF can not be used with steel media.
XL-1296 is a highly acidic non-chelating acid descaling compound used with ceramic or plastic media on all metals. It was designed to function as a scale and tarnish remover with non-chelating materials. XL‑1296 cannot be used with carbon steel media. It was designed to function as a non-chelating version of XL‑414.
XL-1300 is a very powerful non-chelating acid descaling compound specifically designed to be used with copper. It turns copper bright pink. XL‑1300 does not handle oils well.
XL-1351 is a very powerful acid descaling compound to be used on non-ferrous metals especially brass to remove very heavy heat scale and tarnish. XL‑1351 is built with ammonium bifluoride and cannot be stored in any glass containers.
XL-1362B is a liquid alkaline deburring and descaling compound for ferrous and powdered metals. It provides rust protection during processing and prevents media "loading." XL‑1362B can also be used with non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, copper, etc. with ceramic or plastic media for deburring and cleaning.
XL-1368 is a Non-Chelating Acid Scale Remover, designed for use with stainless steel parts |
